BACKGROUND
Health Education and Literacy Programme is:
A non-governmental, Community Based Primary Health Care Programme
Working in various Katchi Abadies of Karachi.
It was established in 1990 and registered with the GSSWD in 1991.
The Organization has tax exemption.
HELP comprises of professionals including:
Doctors
Chartered Accountant
Lawyers
Social workers
The Motto of the Project is SELFSUFFICIENCY.
Aims at Social Mobilization and Self-Support.
The organization’s focus is on Health care of women of reproductive age and children pertaining to:
Reproductive health
Family planning
Nutrition.
Early child development and preprimary schooling
Immunization
Presently HELP is working in:
Neelam Colony
Lower Gizri
Khuda ki Basti (Karachi)
Sanghar
It covers a population of ~ 50,000 people.
Objectives
1. To increase and improve existing services:
i.e.:
Increase in coverage of population in providing Ante-natal, Natal and Post-natal services through our health centers.
Family Planning and birth spacing motivation.
Increase awareness regarding reproductive health by 25%.
Obtain baseline incidence in last one year of sexually transmitted diseases among married couples and reduce incidence by 10% from present level.
Sustain >95 coverage of full immunization in children <5 years.
Provide nutrition counseling to women (Breast Feeding, IYCF and maternal nutrition) to cover 50% of target population.
Rehabilitation of malnourished children to normal nutritional status through counseling and dietary supplementation and successful rehabilitation in > 90% of such children in covered population.
Provide medical treatment for common childhood illnesses.
2. Develop referral link with Community Hospitals:
Consolidate referral linkages with government Hospital, Maternity Houses, Green star (Family Planning) clinics.
Initiate referral linkage with private medical hospitals in vicinity of target areas.
Indicators
Following indicators are used to measure the objectives.
Increased awareness regarding reproductive health.
Increased in Contraceptive use rate.
Decrease in the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases.
Increased coverage of tetanus toxoid vaccination among women of child bearing age.
Increased No. Of Antenatal registration.
Increased No. Of Hospital deliveries.
Increased EPI coverage.
Decreased NMR, IMR, <5 years, MMR.
Increase in children with normal nutrition status.
